This mecca of domesticity recently relocated from Harvard Square to Davis Square. Chock full of honey-scented candles, stacks of stainless strainers, smooth-wooden bowls, and custom doorknobs will add to any cookie-cutting life-style. A smaller and more eclectic alternative to nearby Crate & Barrel, Bowl & Board offers a modest selection of classy furniture (tables $40-495, lamps $100-235), in addition to picture frames, floormats, and kitchen extras such as fine teas and egg timers. Look out for the somewhat imposing wall of clocks ($20-$242), with vintage as well as sleek metallic models all ticking and tocking in unison.

While McIntyre and Moore may not boast as many titles as Widener, it's much easier to browse and navigate through this crowded used bookstore's 85,000 books organized by 300 subject areas. Specializing in books which are out-of-print and generally scholarly in their subject matter (although there is a small fiction and literature section), most books are in excellent condition and sell for half the list price or less. Bookworms will delight in special “foot” deals—10% off a foot of books, 15% off 2ft., 20% off 3ft—and a Frequent Buyer Card that gives you 10% off your next purchase for every $100 spent. McIntyre and Moore also buys books of all types (but no textbooks, and call before bringing in your collection for evaluation) for 17-25% the expected sale price, which for most is about $5-9.

Their "Be Nice or Go Away" sign above the cash register at Poor Little Rich Girl in Somerville sets the tone at this hipster consignment shop in Davis Square. Originally a hidden hole-in-the-wall on Highland Avenue, owner Meredith Byam's independent vision has grown into a full-blown shopping experience at its new location on Elm Street that’s chockfull of vintage jeans, killer pumps, '80s-style shoulder pad dresses and old-school clutch purses with attitude. Also, the PLRG staff gets creative with its elaborate window displays (so, even if you’re not in the mood to search through the racks of second-hand clothing, the windows alone are enough to inspire a repeat visit). They also have a 2nd location on Newbury Street. Tons of great shopping in Davis square, goodwill, magpie, la chic boutique , great fun check out this square.

Every neighborhood needs a dollar store. Period. This Family Dollar in Davis Square is on the higher end of the bargain-basement spectrum. The shop has a lot of nice goodies—ranging from cheaply priced Styrofoam cups to laundry detergent to a nifty alarm clock. With stores like Wal-Mart and Target out of reach to those without a car, this Dollar Store is the next best thing for houshold-related goods.

Forget Blockbuster. Founded in 1987, Hollywood Express is one of the few remaining independent video stores remaining in Davis Square. Their selection of classic, indie and foreign flicks is stellar. However, in an age ruled by online giants like Netflix and Blockbuster, the niche this store once served is slowly migrating to the Internet. It's sad but indie video stores are slowly becoming obsolete. Meanwhile, enjoy the perks. Hollywood Express regulars love their 2-for-1 rental deals every Tues-Wed.
