Unlike the designer label that shares its name, Diesel is welcoming to all. This java joint fuels students and locals with coffee ($1-3.50) and specialty drinks like raspberry lime rickeys ($2.50) and the Rusty Slide (chai blended with ice and vanilla ice cream; $4.75). The cool staff prepares awesome pizza bagels ($3.75), and many of the assorted sandwiches ($5-6), soups, and pastries ($2) are vegan-friendly. For a true caffeine fix, fill 'er up with the Solid Six ($4), 6 shots of espresso, at the unfinished bar or one of the red leather booths adorned with license plates. Diesel also entertains the leisurely with pool tables ($5 to play before 7pm, $8 after), board games, and even a magnetic poetry board.

A step up from Urban Outfitters, this hip alternative women's clothing store has everything an angst-filled teenager might need—from pinstriped Dickies to...khaki Dickies. Although the clothes here are a bit overpriced, there are tons of trendy digs to be found. From suede jackets and skirts to off-beat shirts, eclectic costume jewelry, and everything in between. Black and Blues is the perfect store for women who want to look like they went to a thrift store while paying boutique prices.

Rosebud Diner embodies the emerging funkiness that makes Somerville’s Davis Square special. This ‘50s streetcar throwback boasts waitresses straight from Mel’s Diner and a hipster clientele that devours the restaurant’s fluffy omelets and kick-ass burgers. And, if you’re longing for comfort food, try the meatloaf. Rosebud Diner, a refurbished 1941 Worcester dining car, also serves booze so it’s a great place to grab a brew or a glass of wine.
