Craving an authentic Mexican burrito with traditional flavors and healthy ingredients? Anna’s Taqueria at Davis Square is a refreshing respite in an area full of overpriced Mexican joints. The décor is no frills compared to nearby Qdoba and the new kid on the block, Chipotle. However, you’ll go loco over Anna’s top-notch meats and poultry. And, with meals averaging $6 and under, you can’t beat the price.

Family-owned House of Tibet Kitchen, Massachusetts' first Tibetan restaurant, is a perfect place to try new foods and yak—excuse us, converse—with a friend. Begin your authentic home-cooked Tibetan and Bhutanese meal with shogo labtak, potato cutlets with peas, carrots, and herbs ($4.50). The Tibetan specialty is momo, or large dumplings stuffed with meat, tofu, or potatoes (momo combo $14.50). Other entrees include Tibetan-style curries and stirfries, all served with tena thukpa, “5-element” lentil soup said to “raise health.” A note to the uninitiated: Tibetan food is starchy and seasoning is subtle, but dishes with international influences and non-traditional ingredients offer more flavor. Round out your meal with hot apple cider with cottage cheese ($2.50), traditional Tibetan tea with yak butter ($2), or dreysil, sweet saffron rice dessert eaten to celebrate the Dalai Lama's birthday ($4.50). Entrees $9.50-14.50.

Open since April 2009, Boston Burger Company has burst onto the Davis Sq. scene offering some of the best burgers around. Currently there are 22 types of burgers and a huge variety of toppings to choose from along with your choice of cole slaw or beans. Also, included in the wide range of burgers are 11 different types of fries, a good selection of non-burger sandwiches, appetizers, wings and salads. The décor may be unusually trippy (gilded walls, blue fairy lights, and even a pair of disembodied mannequin legs), but you don't have to be a surrealist to enjoy this romantic, upscale Somerville eatery's exciting menu of 40 tapas and 9 authentic Spanish entrees. For the uninitiated, tapas, loosely translated as “appetizers,” are savory little dishes to share; count on ordering 2-3 per person. Sample the mushroom-stuffed artichoke hearts ($7.50) or the pato braseado (roast duckling with berry sauce, $7.50). If you'd rather stick to a single dish, paella is always a classic ($24). Don't forget the famous sangria or the impressive Spanish wines and ports. And for dessert, the consistently appearing “monthly special” of strawberries in vanilla sherry butter with ice cream ($7.50) is heavenly. Tapas $4-8.50; entrees $17-24. Arrive early, as Dalí doesn't accept reservations—after 6pm, even Salvador himself would have to wait.

The best breakfast in Boston is not in a fancy hotel but at this local favorite in Union Sq. Pastel umbrellas sprout from each picnic table in the grape arbor outside, where a multiethnic crowd flocks each weekend for great food at incredible prices. Brunch here has a Portuguese flavor, with popular dishes like linguiça sausage omelettes ($9) and sweet bread French toast ($7). Best of all, every entree comes with fresh-squeezed OJ, baked goods, luscious hot cereal or fruit, and unlimited coffee—more than plenty to fill you up ‘til dinner and easily large enough for two. However, all you frugal Fannies out there, beware: there is a $3 sharing fee. On weekend mornings, be prepared to wait up to half an hour. Entrees $5-12.

Well, head on over to Union Square in Somerville where you can have your pick of beans, meats, cheeses, and salsas to create your perfect concoction. This cozy Mexican and El Salvadorian hybrid is 100% authentic. Tacos Lupita serves up some of the area’s best, handmade tacos at the cheapest prices. Less is definitely more at this hidden Elm Street hole in the wall including their stellar gorditas and tasty mulitas. Cash only!
The Boston Globe recently highlighted Tacos Lupita as one of the best taco spots in Boston: "You can get football-sized burritos at chains in Cambridge's Porter Square, but do yourself the favor of walking a few blocks east to this Somerville mecca. You'll find daintily proportioned tacos stuff ed with chorizo good enough to make an East LA native homesick. The smoky, warm-spiced sausage is charred and crumbled, then topped with the requisite onions and cilantro and served with an optional side of hot and tart tomatillo-based salsa that oozes freshness. Without the salsa, the tacos can border on dry, but with it, they're transcendent. Bottom line Don't let size fool you - these smallish snacks pack flavor that comes at you stronger than a masked wrestler at a lucha libre."

This casual Somerville Indian bistro specializes in traditional North Indian delicacies and (you guessed it) creative kebabs. What makes this Indian place different from others is that the dishes are very mild (also delicious).
Start your meal with an order of lamb potli samosas ($5) or one of the Factory's freshly-baked breads—naan, poori, roti, or chapathi. Entrees range from salaoni macchi (mahi mahi cubes with herbs and spices, $14) to shaan e murgh (chicken stuffed with cheese and nut mousse, $15). The kesar mango cheesecake ($4.50), mango lassi ($4), or pistachio shake ($4) all bring the meal to a sweet finish.
For a great deal, come for the lunch buffer where you can sample from at least 4 different dishes and several appetizers for a bargain $7. Appetizers $5-8, entrees $12-18.

This is a great neighborhood bar/restaurant. Friendly staff (many of them veterans of the Cambridge/Somerville restaurant scene). A pretty eclectic menu that focuses on home-made goodness over a plethora of options. That being said, there is most likely something for every taste in your group; faves include their burgers and an outstanding seafood gumbo. Fitting with the hip cadre of its Somerville surroundings, the venue sports live music on Sunday nights and well crafted artisinal cocktails. With a warm and bustling ambiance, the Highland Kitchen is worth the visit. Note that the kitchen closes at 11:00PM, but the bar stays open until a 1;00AM last call.
