Hub Comics, the comics shop for NPR listeners, opened January 19, 2008, in Somerville's Union Square. This spot boasts a killer selection of graphic novels and paperbacks. The staff at Hub Comics are beyond helpful--willing to go that extra mile to help you find the comic your looking for. And the shop's dog, Bub (part Basset Hound, part Golden Retriever) greets regulars who make the trek to Union Square. The owners are opening up a back area (making Hub Comics 1,000 square feet and boasting new and used DVDs as well as a newsstand with new and used books.)

Chock full of honey-scented candles, stacks of stainless strainers, smooth-wooden bowls, and custom doorknobs will add to any cookie-cutting life-style. A smaller and more eclectic alternative to nearby Crate & Barrel, Bowl & Board offers a modest selection of classy furniture (tables $40-495, lamps $100-235), in addition to picture frames, floormats, and kitchen extras such as fine teas and egg timers. Look out for the somewhat imposing wall of clocks ($20-$242), with vintage as well as sleek metallic models all ticking and tocking in unison. The newest addition to the yuppification of Davis Square, this cleaner-than-average CVS/Pharmacy carries all of your personal-care needs like shampoo, face products, toothpaste and a cutting-edge photo processing center for digital/traditional photos. CVS also offers prescription medication, over-the-counter medication, cards, gifts, household needs, etc. It’s staffed by a board-certified pharmacist who staffs the counter to answer any questions about the prescribed medications.

Their "Be Nice or Go Away" sign above the cash register at Poor Little Rich Girl in Somerville sets the tone at this hipster consignment shop in Davis Square. Originally a hidden hole-in-the-wall on Highland Avenue, owner Meredith Byam's independent vision has grown into a full-blown shopping experience at its new location on Elm Street that’s chockfull of vintage jeans, killer pumps, '80s-style shoulder pad dresses and old-school clutch purses with attitude. Also, the PLRG staff gets creative with its elaborate window displays (so, even if you’re not in the mood to search through the racks of second-hand clothing, the windows alone are enough to inspire a repeat visit).
