Craving an authentic Mexican burrito with traditional flavors and healthy ingredients? Anna’s Taqueria at Davis Square is a refreshing respite in an area full of overpriced Mexican joints. The décor is no frills compared to nearby Qdoba and the new kid on the block, Chipotle. However, you’ll go loco over Anna’s top-notch meats and poultry. And, with meals averaging $6 and under, you can’t beat the price.

Family-owned House of Tibet Kitchen, Massachusetts' first Tibetan restaurant, is a perfect place to try new foods and yak—excuse us, converse—with a friend. Begin your authentic home-cooked Tibetan and Bhutanese meal with shogo labtak, potato cutlets with peas, carrots, and herbs ($4.50). The Tibetan specialty is momo, or large dumplings stuffed with meat, tofu, or potatoes (momo combo $14.50). Other entrees include Tibetan-style curries and stirfries, all served with tena thukpa, “5-element” lentil soup said to “raise health.” A note to the uninitiated: Tibetan food is starchy and seasoning is subtle, but dishes with international influences and non-traditional ingredients offer more flavor. Round out your meal with hot apple cider with cottage cheese ($2.50), traditional Tibetan tea with yak butter ($2), or dreysil, sweet saffron rice dessert eaten to celebrate the Dalai Lama's birthday ($4.50). Entrees $9.50-14.50.

Ball Square'sBall Square’s True Grounds begins where the now-defunct Someday Café left off. This local artist enclave is a true neighborhood coffeehouse with a stellar array of wraps and sandwiches that revel in Somerville's emerging color—including the Broadway (tuna melt with swiss), the Magoun Square (tofu, homemade hummus, sprouts and cucumbers) and the B-Square (roast beef, herbed boursin cheese and tomatoes). While this comfy café is becoming a hangout for up-and-coming musicians and writers (they offer free wi-fi to patrons), True Grounds' claim to fame is its refined aficionado coffees called George H. Howell’s terroir, which is served up in larger-than-usual cups and brewed to perfection. Owners Rhett and Amy also host a music night held the last Tuesday of the month from 7-9 p.m.

Open since April 2009, Boston Burger Company has burst onto the Davis Sq. scene offering some of the best burgers around. Currently there are 22 types of burgers and a huge variety of toppings to choose from along with your choice of cole slaw or beans. Also, included in the wide range of burgers are 11 different types of fries, a good selection of non-burger sandwiches, appetizers, wings and salads. If you think you can handle it, try their famous Artery Clogger. A juicy 8 oz burger beer battered and deep fried, then smothered in BBQ sauce and topped with bacon and American cheese.

The décor may be unusually trippy (gilded walls, blue fairy lights, and even a pair of disembodied mannequin legs), but you don't have to be a surrealist to enjoy this romantic, upscale Somerville eatery's exciting menu of 40 tapas and 9 authentic Spanish entrees. For the uninitiated, tapas, loosely translated as “appetizers,” are savory little dishes to share; count on ordering 2-3 per person. Sample the mushroom-stuffed artichoke hearts ($7.50) or the pato braseado (roast duckling with berry sauce, $7.50). If you'd rather stick to a single dish, paella is always a classic ($24). Don't forget the famous sangria or the impressive Spanish wines and ports. And for dessert, the consistently appearing “monthly special” of strawberries in vanilla sherry butter with ice cream ($7.50) is heavenly. Tapas $4-8.50; entrees $17-24. Arrive early, as Dalí doesn't accept reservations—after 6pm, even Salvador himself would have to wait.

Formerly Benjapon on Elm Street, this new Thai restaurant in the outskirts of Davis Square has all of the ingredients for success: a refurbished dining area, an extremely friendly staff, cheaper-than-usual prices and a revamped menu that reflects the changing tastes in this gentrified part of Somerville/North Cambridge. Reminiscent of the popular Lemongrass Grill in Brooklyn, Joey’s Thai Café’s appropriate slogan is “happy in – happy out.” The menu sports a few spicy additions including Joey’s Spicy Pad Thai (an authentic spicy version of Pad Thai stir-fried with shrimp and chicken--$7.30) and Drunken Chicken (stir fried poultry in extra spicy chili sauce--$6.95). And for Davis Square’s ever-growing population of vegetarians, Joey offers an amazing selection of healthy tofu dishes.

A Somerville fixture for 120 years, Lyndell’s Bakery specializes in cakes, cookies, Italian pastries, cupcakes and doughnuts. Their half-moon cookies (six-inch thin golden cakes chocolate and white icing) are their claim to fame, but it’s the shop’s no-frills charm and old-fashioned pastries like their bismarks and jelly rolls that keeps the locals coming back for more. Also, Lyndell’s is one of the last non-chain bakeries in Somerville where you can snag a doughnut for under a buck.

The best breakfast in Boston is not in a fancy hotel but at this local favorite in Union Sq. Pastel umbrellas sprout from each picnic table in the grape arbor outside, where a multiethnic crowd flocks each weekend for great food at incredible prices. Brunch here has a Portuguese flavor, with popular dishes like linguiça sausage omelettes ($9) and sweet bread French toast ($7). Best of all, every entree comes with fresh-squeezed OJ, baked goods, luscious hot cereal or fruit, and unlimited coffee—more than plenty to fill you up ‘til dinner and easily large enough for two. However, all you frugal Fannies out there, beware: there is a $3 sharing fee. On weekend mornings, be prepared to wait up to half an hour. Entrees $5-12.

Renee McLeod - Chef/Owner, Petsi Pies: "My grandmother's from Virginia, my other grandmother is from Alabama, and both of them are wonderful bakers and taught me how to bake." She bakes dozens of pies from scratch each day, both sweet and savory. Renee will make any kind of pie a customer asks for, but she specializes in old fashioned Southern pies like Sweet Potato. There are only two tiny ovens, so pies are made fresh all day long in small batches, and Renee tries to time the process so customers can pick up their pies while they're still warm!
