It may not be particularly charming or spotlessly clean, but its central location makes the mid-priced Harvard Square Hotel a perennial favorite. The 73 singles and doubles have TV, wireless internet, refrigerators, hair dryers, irons, and ironing boards. Singles and doubles $119-269; rooms $300+ during Commencement (3-night minimum). Generally, book 2 weeks in advance; around Harvard University's Commencement week, though, make reservations 2 years ahead (deposit due 1 year in advance). Guests also have access to the not-so-nearby YMCA facilities (820 Mass. Ave.). Discounts available for AAA, AARP, and Harvard affiliates on official business. Parking available ($17/day, overnight $27/night). 4 rooms with wheelchair access.

For a true New England experience, we heartily recommend this comfortable, cozy and historical B&B. Located about 3/4 of the way to Porter Sq., the Mary Prentiss Inn is a convenient option for parents and relatives of Quadlings, though not the best place for large gatherings. The 20 individually-decorated rooms (all doubles) range from $119-219 in the winter/spring, and $169-259 in the summer/fall. Guests are treated to a full or continental breakfast each morning, as well as tea and freshly baked cookies in the parlor each afternoon. Local calls are complimentary, and, best of all, parking is free. 10-20% off for AAA and AARP members. Call for Commencement reservations starting in Mar. after Junior Parents' Weekend; rates increase by $30, and minimum stay is 3 nights.
